This song was written as a response to a discussion about reasons that marriages and long term relationships sometimes end so bitterly.  My contention was that both people in the relationship had to be equally committed to the relationship.  As one of my wise uncles said at my wedding, a marriage won't work if each person is only willing to give 50%.  Both have to be willing to give 100%.
